Kansas Muzzleloader & Dove Combo Hunt

Five days in mid-September. Doves in the morning, deer stands in the evening, and an early season opportunity at a mature Kansas whitetail. This is the only hunt we offer that combines morning dove hunting with afternoon and evening deer hunting on the same trip.

Two Hunts in One Trip

The appeal of September is getting two very different hunting experiences during the same five days. The mornings are spent in the dove fields, while the afternoons and evenings are dedicated to the deer hunt.

If someone in your party would rather not shoot doves in the morning, they can come along, look around the country, and simply hunt the evenings.

How the Day Runs

You wake up early, have breakfast and try to be out at sunrise. The guides typically set you up between roosting areas and feeding areas for the morning dove hunt.

After a couple of hours of dove shooting, you return to the lodge in the mid-morning for a nap or a snack. Your guides prepare the doves for lunch, giving you the chance to enjoy birds from your own hunt.

After lunch, there is time to relax before heading back out to the deer stands. We typically want hunters in their stands three to four hours before dark. With the later September sunset, dinner will be later in the evening.

An Early Opportunity at Kansas Whitetails

This hunt takes place at the opening of the Kansas deer season. The deer on our farms have not been pressured since the previous December, giving you the opportunity to hunt early season deer before they have experienced the pressure that builds later in the year.

Early season deer can still be using established patterns, making September a different style of whitetail hunting than the rut-focused archery weeks or the post-rut December rifle hunt.

Muzzleloader Deer Hunting

Muzzleloader shots typically range from 50 to 100 yards, with longer opportunities possible depending on the property and conditions.

Our farms are pre-scouted and baited before the season. Each day, your guide considers recent scouting information, wind direction, historical data, trail camera information, what you have been seeing during the hunt, and their experience with the property when deciding where to place you.

The Dove Hunt

The morning dove hunt is built around the movement between roosting and feeding areas. After the morning hunt, your guides prepare the doves for lunch at the lodge.

We do not offer a standalone dove hunt. Dove hunting is offered as part of this muzzleloader and dove combo experience.

Kansas HIP Permit for Dove Hunting

Hunters participating in the dove portion of the Kansas Muzzleloader & Dove Combo Hunt must purchase a Kansas HIP permit online. The permit costs $2.50 per hunter and is required for dove hunting.

10,000 Acres Across Kansas Deer Units 4, 7, 8, and 14

Our whitetail properties cover 10,000 acres across Kansas deer units 4, 7, 8, and 14. We lease private ground with 100% exclusivity, and properties range up to 1,200 acres. Multiple smaller parcels across the hunting units give our guides options when deer movement and conditions change.

The eastern properties feature rolling hills, open pasture, and cedar thickets. Farther west, the ground becomes flatter, with river bottoms, farmland, and CRP. The western ground also tends to provide more consistent wind conditions.

Stand Options and Daily Setup

We maintain around 100 ladder stands and 30 box blinds, along with hang-on stands and brushed-in ground blinds for situations where a different setup makes sense.

Your guide chooses your setup each morning based on the information available that day. Recent scouting, wind direction, historical data, trail camera information, your observations, and guide experience all factor into the decision.

Controlled Hunting Pressure

We typically have 8 to 12 deer hunters in a week, with two to three hunters per guide, and 50 to 70 deer hunters across the full season. Multiple properties allow us to spread hunters out and rest individual farms rather than concentrating pressure on the same ground.

Our Whitetail Standard

We have a strict 140-inch minimum for bucks. There is no additional fee for a buck that meets or exceeds the minimum. A buck scoring 130 to 139 inches carries a $500 additional fee, while a buck scoring under 130 inches carries a $1,500 additional fee.

Buck ScoreAdditional Fee
130 to 139 inches$500
Under 130 inches$1,500

A 140- to 170-inch deer is a more realistic expectation for this style of hunting. A 170-inch deer is not behind every tree, and a 200-inch deer is very uncommon. Larger bucks are possible, but hunters need to be comfortable passing deer and accepting the risk that comes with waiting for the right opportunity.

We just finished our 5 day early muzzleloader hunt with King Whitetails. I cannot say enough good things about this hunt. From the accommodations to the food, to the guides, this experience was first class! Our group went 7/8 on Kansas Giants! Danny, Brian and Carson worked their tails off to put us on exceptional bucks every single day. Although I came away empty handed, I will most definitely be booking again for 2028. King Whitetails is the real deal.

There is no question that King Whitetails is the #1 outfitter in Kansas and probably the entire country. I truly believe there are not another group of people who will work harder to make your stay enjoyable. I would not change a thing about them if we harvested big bucks or not.......but we slammed them!!!! We will be back to do it again as soon as we can.

I was able to connect with King Whitetails on the back end of a work trip out in Kansas in March 2026. Coming from Hawaii I wanted to experience great predator hunting that I have always read about growing up in this State. Weather was flipping over from mid 50’s in the mornings up to 95 degrees during the day. Predator movement and responses were excellent one night and the next a bit slower. In hunting you can never expect a guarantee but Carson and I worked hard and we traveled to many calling sites setting up call sequences and the use of thermal technology was excellent and legal for season. I got to see some awesome wildlife out in the field. The custom built rifle used was a wildcat .22 Creedmoor and made fast work at the quick and leary targets. Shots ranged from under 40 yds and out past 400 yds. harvesting coyotes. Housing and food was awesome and greatly appreciated, Kaci you can cook well! Great people, great opportunities and some great conversations shared while out in the hills and flats over in Kansas. These bruddahs know there stuff and took care of a Hawaii boy like me. Greatly appreciate you guys and Mahalo Plenty🤙🏽!

Absolutely a great turkey hunt! Had an outstanding turkey hunt and couldn’t be more impressed with the experience. Despite a challenging morning, the team’s perseverance paid off we watched nearly 20 birds and harvested a beautiful Rio. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful. I’ll definitely be returning for my next Rio hunt.
